Intrinsic Safety "iD" - IEC 61241.11
This is a useful explosion protection technique, mainly used where sensors measuring the temperature or humidity of dust laden atmospheres are used. The requirements for the limitation of spark energy are very similar to the techniques used for intrinsic safety in gases and vapours. Generally, examination of intrinsic safety to IEC 60079-11, using the spark ignition requirements of Group IIB, is sufficient for "iD". The surface temperature requirements for dust atmospheres are not similar to gases and vapours, as the thermal conductivitiy of dust, and also the depth of dust layers that form over the component, need to be considered when awarding the temperature classification for the equipment.
